A must have for every outdoor enthusiast

log-phone-charger

Hmm what could it be?  Well it's awesome to start with.  I'll give you a hint look to the left of the second pic.

Apparently it's a hand cranked cell phone charger mounted into a log found in a Chechen rebel camp.

Why I forgot to do my homework: I have brain damage.

An article titled "Reduced oxygen due to high-altitude exposure relates to atrophy in motor-function brain areas" (PDF warning) published in the European Journal of Neurology back in October came to my attention recently. I have a hunch you can figure out what the article has to say from the titles.

So you don't have to actually read a peer reviewed journal article (who would ever do such a thing?) is the first paragraph from the article. I was really stoked that they just came right out with it so I didn't have to wade through eight pages of smartness. (Actually it's kinda interesting... but don't tell anyone I said that)

Conclusion: These findings suggest that extremely high-altitude exposures may cause subtle white and
grey matter changes that mainly affect brain regions involved in motor activity.

Is anyone actually surprised by this? If you go without oxygen for too long you won't be the same.

Hug a cop, get a helmet.

So i really dont know how i would feel about getting a hug from a cop but it looks like some cops over in Denmark are giving them out to cyclists with out helmets.  On top of that they also give the cyclist a helmet.  Kinda creepy but maybe wearing your new free helmet or having to hug that cop again might get to you make the right choice.

Some very cool shots from Dan Vojtech.

My roommate has that board.

Vojtech does have some wallpapers for download.  I wish they all were; photographers and their silly desires to make money so they can eat.

Get your filthy hands off my rain

Who Owns the Rain? Hint: It's Not Always Homeowners

Across the country, resourceful homeowners have embraced rainwater capture as a way of conserving community water supplies while maintaining healthy gardens. Unfortunately, rain barrels are sometimes at odds with the law. Facing certain water scarcity, cities and states have begun to wrestle with the conundrum of water rights versus conservation. When it all shakes out, will you own the rain that falls on your own property?

It all comes down to water rights.  If you live in a place that gets lot's of rain you may not be familiar with all the fun that comes with  water rates.  In dryer areas water rights are a huge deal and if you're a lawyer in the field it will put your kids through sixteen years of private schooling, pay the mortgage, and get you a boat.  I know of battles in Idaho have been raging for decades over water rights.

All that being said, is someone going to come get you for collecting a little rain wanter in your yard?  Only if you really ticked off the wrong people.

Let’s just skip all the puny little waterfalls and run Angel Falls!

tyler-bradt

Sadly no pictures or videos of the record breaking drop yet but Kayak Session just posted the first interview with Tyler Bradt.  There are some good pics of him running some other big waterfalls as well as some pics of Palouse Falls.

In March, Brazilian Pedro Oliveira ran a 127-foot falls in Brazil breaking Tyler Bradt’s former 107-foot record (alexandra falls, NWT canada). There was huge media coverage worldwide about Olivia’s record. While most people imagined this record would stay for a very long time, Tyler Bradt just ran the 186 ft (nearly 60-meter) Palouse Falls in Washington State, smashing Olivia’s record by 59 ft!!!
In an exclusive first interview for Kayak Session mag, Tyler answers some of the burning questions everyone has been wondering about since the news came out…

It sounds like the run will be in “Dream Result” coming out some time next spring.  "The footage will be out soon in the media."

ContourHD helmet cam

1_01Well the folks over at ContourHD are trying to show up one one of my favorite pieces of gear.  That would be my POV1.  The POV1 is by the far the best helmet cam that is out the right now.  Look forward to a small video clip of last weekends pond jumping birthday party to see just how well it did.  The only big complaint that i have is that it is only SD video.  Now dont get me wrong, for most use SD if great.  Compared to the other helmets cams that are out there you can complain.  Even with that though i wish it was 720p.  From what i am reading about the ContourHD helmet cam it is.  Adding to that the fact that is weighs in at 4 ounces and can take a 16gb MicroSD card it looks like it is stacking up to be quite the cam.  I wonder if i can get my hands on one to really see if it stacks up to the my POV1.
